WHY USE MICROSOFT® ACCESS? Here's some reasons why | A word of caution While some businesses can afford large, server driven database, systems created to meet the needs of their staff and customers, many smaller businesses cannot justify the level of investment necessary. A sizeable, steady, business will probably invest well in excess of £100,000 for each system such as human resources, stock control, customer information, finance etc. Small businesses cannot afford the same level of investment and often their businesses model changes in response to customer and economic needs. Smaller businesses need systems that are affordable, flexible, and will develop along with the business as it grows. Even large corporations with giant data management systems still use smaller databases to meet specific needs across the organisation. Microsoft® Access is the most cost-effective database development platform for your company.
MS Access is a very powerful database tool, but in the wrong hands can cause quite a headache to an organisation. Historically, MS Access, because it has been bundled into the MS Office Pro suite, has been used in-house to develop small databases to answer a specific business need. Some businesses are riddled with these small databases and many IT departments refuse to support them. The original developer has left the business, possibly password protecting the code, and now the staff are left to continue using something that is out of date and no longer efficient. It is no wonder that IT departments look upon these databases with horror. Often, MS Access has been used to create a database where the data should have been on a spreadsheet. Likewise, MS Excel has been used to create a spreadsheet that should have been a database. Be very cautious about allowing the in-house Access "expert" to develop a database for you. Where will you be if they leave? DO have your Access database developed by someone who will design and build the system correctly and give you support long after they have finished. |
